Bike the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes in Beautiful North Idaho

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes will be the premier trail of Idaho. Because it has been converted from railroad tracks it goes through some of the most spectacular and remote places in North Idaho. For more pictures of the trail, click here.

The Trail of the Hiawatha

The Trail of the Hiawatha is about 70 miles from Harrison. A mountain bike or hybrid bike is recommended. It crosses over trestles and takes you through tunnels up over the St. Joe River Drainage. A truly magnificent ride, a real Idaho adventure. For more information,  click here.

The Anderson Lake Loop

This is one of our favorite rides - exactly 6 miles long. Park at the Springston Trailhead or ride the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes to the Springston Trailhead and then turn right onto Anderson Lake Road. This road takes you up and over Anderson Lake for some great views of Coeur d'Alene River and Thompson Lake as well as Anderson Lake itself. It has one hill to tackle that goes uphill for about .6 mile. At the bottom of that hill you will reach the intersection of Anderson Lake Road and Bell Canyon Road. Take a right onto Bell Canyon Road in order to head back to Highway 97 and access to Blue Lake Road. This will bring you back to the Springston Bridge Trailhead where you can head back to Harrison or continue up the river toward Black Lake. Figure anywhere from 30 minutes to 50 minutes depending on how you climb hills.

The Thompson Lake Loop

Another favorite is a gentle 7 - 1/2 mile loop that is half flat, paved county road and have rolling-hills, gravel. There is a 1/2 mile section on Highway 97 but is very straight, wide with plenty of visibility for both vehicles and bicyclist. The best feature of this ride is that it circles a wildlife refuge that has birds of all shapes and sizes. It is rare that you ride it without seeing some bird you haven't previously seen. . You can park for this ride at the Fish and Game Parking lot at Highway 97 and Blue Lake Road or at the Springston Trailhead of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes. Or you can reach it by riding to the Springston Trailhead and then riding over the Springston Bridge to Blue Lake Road. Figure anywhere from 40 minutes to 60 minutes for the loop itself.
